Tales of Kashi
Tales of Kashi

Finally, in March 2023, I found myself on a journey that had for long lived in my bucket list, Kashi, the city where time stands frozen. I was lost in the conversations with other passengers on the train as it chugged towards Varanasi Junction. One spoke to me about his experience, his name being 'Kashi' by birth. He is a retired professor and has been visiting the city for over two decades annually. "This city has a soul of its own," he said with a smile, his eyes twinkling with devotion. Little did I know, I was about to share something he spoke.

First Glimpse of Kashi: A City Like None Other

From the station, the very first moment I stepped out, Kashi's energy touched my soul. You could hear the streets alive with pilgrims, monks, locals, and tourists moving haphazardly but in a way that just felt exactly right. The sound of temple bells in the incense and fresh flowers turned everything into a pretty peaceful yet exciting turf.

Before going to our attraction, the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, I had followed a time-old belief that we first had to go to the Kaal Bhairav, the guardian deity of Kashi, before going to visit him. The unofficial oral tradition of the place maintains that without his [Kaal Bhairav's] permission, one's coming to Kashi is not complete. It was one of those small and powerful temples, where devotees were pouring black threads into a lot of chants of prayer, an undeterred faith.

After this, I headed to Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The air was heavy, so thick with devotion that you could cut it. The sight of devotees lost in prayer, the unique chants of "Har Har Mahadev," and the golden spire of the temple glowing in sunlight gave me chills. It was just the moment of pure connection: an idea that I'd arrived in the place I'd meant to be.

The Ghats - A Spiritual Wonderland

Majestic Ghats
Majestic Ghats

The real beauty of Kashi, however, lies in its ghats. Waking up at dawn, I decided to go for a boat ride along the Ganges, and what I saw that day left me speechless. Just as the sunlight rose above the horizon and cast an otherworldly glow over the surface of the river, priests performed their morning rituals and holy dips took place. The 84 ghats of Kashi each tell their own story and charm the viewer in their own particular manner.

Two ghats really left a mark on me. Manikarnika Ghat, the burning ghat, is where bodies are burned with the belief that one is bound to receive moksha (liberation) thereafter. It is an overwhelming experience with the continuous flames, chanting of sacred mantras, and the unswerving faith of people, prompting me to reflect on the life-death cycle. In contrast, Dashashwamedh Ghat was a mega spectacle of devotion and vibrancy, well-known for its elaborate Ganga Aarti.

One evening, I went to see this most popular event called the Ganga Aarti, which takes place at Dashashwamedh Ghat. The synchronised movements of the priests, overloaded with the aroma of camphor on fire, the sound of conch shells in the air, a divine feel. Standing together with hundreds, I felt I was partaking in something much larger than myself.

A Boat Ride Through Time

To explore the spirit of Kashi, I took one such exciting boat ride on the Ganges, from one end to another, through all the 84 ghats. As per my experience, each has a different story- some crowded with devotees, some lined by saints completely absorbed in meditation, and some merely looking eloquently, silently witnessing the glory of history. With lights from the ghats blinking off the calm waters, it is spellbinding. I was passing by the Harishchandra Ghat cremation ground, and I felt rather small before and after the great spiritual relationship this city carries with life.

The Hidden Beauty of Kashi’s Narrow Lanes

Beyond the temples and the ghats, Kashi lies in a maze of brocade-like narrow lanes. As one walks inside these lanes, it feels as if there is some other world outside. Impressive, indeed, were paintings of Lord Shiva on walls; street vendors sold colorful trinkets, and the aroma of freshly made kachori and jalebi made one's mouth water.

It was a tiny silk weaving workshop with artisans making the famous Banarasi sarees. It was indeed an enchanting sight to see them work on these weaves with their precious fingers weaving intricate patterns with such talent. It made me appreciate even more the traditions so deep-rooted in this city.

Conversations That Touched My Heart

Kashi is not only a place to sightsee; it is a place with people. One evening, I sat down at Assi Ghat and had a drinking cup of kulhad chai. An old sadhu quite suddenly came up and started talking to me. "You do not find spirituality in books, my child. Experience, experience it within the flow of the Ganges, in the very silence of meditation," he said. His words have since made it to my conscience because they taught me that Kashi is much more than a place: it has a purging effect on one's perceptions.

A Journey That Stays with You Forever

As my trip came to an end, I knew that Kashi had left an imprint on my soul.  It is not a destination; it is a journey on which a person travels through self, faith, and culture. No matter who one is—be it a spirituality seeker, history lover, or adventure lover- Kashi has something for everyone.

If you ever get a chance to visit, go. Walk the ghats, get lost in the lanes, relish the street food, and let the city envelop you in its timeless energy. For Kashi, it is not just a place you visit; it is a place that stays with you forever.
